Introduction to the 2017-18 Season.

The 2017-18 season promises to be the most varied we have yet mounted. We begin in September with the human voice, the first concert being a complete (almost) opera, Bizet's Carmen, in a semi-staged version by Opera Nova and we have a second vocal recital in late November with a welcome return after some years by the Yorkshire Waits, who begin their round of Christmas Concerts with us.

Between these two, in October we welcome for the first time, the brilliant Italian guitar virtuoso, Giulio Tampalini. Having recently heard one of his recitals I can guarantee he will astonish and also amuse you with his mixture of serious and lighter works for guitar.

Our pianists this season began to perform in public with orchestras at a very early age. In fact the Chen brothers, who will play for us in February 2018 are still only 11 and 13yrs old. However, their youth did not prevent them both being prize winners in Chopin International Festival in Warsaw last year. I heard James, the elder brother, make his debut with the Teesside Symphony Orchestra last year playing a Mozart Piano Concerto with great aplomb and he was followed by Jeremy playing solos which included Chopin Studies! We are delighted to give them another opportunity to display their talents in a professional venue as part of our constitutional aim to encourage local talent.

The other two pianistswho complete our season, Tamila Salimdjanova and Zlata Chochieva, began their concert careers at the ages of 9 and 12 yrs respectively. Tamila with the National Symphony Orchestra of Uzbekistan led by conductor Kuvanch Usmanov performing Mozart's Piano Concerto KV 450 in 2007 and Zlata giving a full recital in the Hall of the Moscow Conservatory which was broadcast on Russian television. Both are major prizewinners and Chochieva's recording of the Chopin Studies was considered by one critic to be the finest ever made. .

Note: This brochure goes to press a long time before the last concert of the season in April 2018, so there may on occasion be small changes to the published programme. However we do circulate the up-to-date details of each concert to our members by email a week before they happen, so changes, if any, will be indicated there.
