Welcome to Hartlepool Music Society's 24th season. Our recent seasons have had a truly international flavour, and this year is no exception, with musicians from Sweden, Romania, Japan and Russia scheduled to play for us.
We begin on the 6th October with a recital by the thrilling young Russian pianist, Alexander Karpeyev. Alexander has won many competitions and was a Guildhall Gold Medal finalist recently as well as being given a standing ovation following his recent Wigmore Hall recital. We follow this on the 12th November with a concert by yet more gifted young Russian musicians, the Atrium String Quartet. They won the London International String Quartet competition in 2003, and will play Mozart and Mendelssohn for us as well as Tchaikovsky's remarkable 3rd quartet.
For our Christmas concert this year we have a change of period and a change of venue. We shall be made most welcome at our alternative venue, St.George's UR church on the 12th December for a concert entitled Green Groweth the Hollie, in which the York Waits and the singer, Deborah Catterall, will perform English medieval and renaissance music for the Feast of Christmas.
We return after our Christmas break to the Town Hall Theatre on the 2nd February
2009 for a recital by the outstanding Kungsbacka Piano Trio. Praised for their performances at the Edinburgh Festival and the Wigmore Hall as well as leading venues across Europe, the Kungsbacka Trio will play Haydn, Schumann and Dvorak for us.
We then have the pleasure of welcoming the Michelangelo String Quartet the 24th March 2009.They are four outstanding soloists in their own right who come together to play chamber music. Some of you may have heard their recent live broadcast on Radio 3 in which they played Schumann Op. 41/1 in A Minor, and they will be playing that in Hartlepool along with the Beethoven Quartet Op.18/5 and Shostakovich's Quartet No. 2.
Our final concert takes place the 6th April 2009, and will be a recital by Fenella Barton(violin) and Katya Apekisheva (piano). This will be Fenella's 3rd appearance for us, and they both appeared as part of the Kandinsky Trio some years ago. Many of you will have heard Katya's playing on Radio 3 recently as she is now a BBC Young Generation Artist, and we welcome both of them backto play for us in Hartlepool.
I hope you enjoy the season.
